Get your kicks,

Kick up your heels,

Kick Pleat (Skirt),

Alive and kickin'

"Kick it!' (presumably a reference to the bass drum which is sometimes called the kick drum-- ironically this phrase seems specific to rap, techno, rave, trance, hip-hop, and other drum-machine based music with a "four on the floor" bass drum pattern-- four beats to the measure and every beat is played on the bass drum).

Liza,
So glad that this post caused a lovely conversation with you and your mom! "baby" is a lovely second word, as it shows where the true connection between you and your sister started!
glad you liked the post! thanks for leaving such a thoughtful comment!

WineSwirl,

Candy is a great one! It seems that a lot of pets are named based on a child's first word.

thanks for sharing!

The thing I love about this post is that it forces a reader to dig something out of the past of which they have no personal memory. I had to ask my mother, and it generated an amazing conversation when I told her about the post that Alexis wrote and we began to think about the fascinating process of life as a human being....
My first word that I connected to the thing it was representing was mama, then baby... I think because my sister was born a year after me!!! SOOO CUTE. Now she is my bestest friend in the world! Interesting..... Great post.

Maya,

Thanks for sharing your fabulous story! Your multiple letter tag would be considered a monogram according to the actual definition. I was just breaking down the word and having fun with the roots!

Technically, I guess that's initialing and not monogramming (hence the mono part of monogram!) But this article reminded me of it so much!

On the note of funny monograms, I have a mail organizer (one of those things that has the days of the month numbered so you can file your bills for the date their due, etc) that my mom got me for Christmas. She thought it would be nice if she got it monogrammed for me, not thinking that my initials are M.A.N. Because there are no periods in the monogram, I now have a mail organizer that proudly says MAN in big gold letters on it. It takes people a while to figure it out and I generally enjoy letting them be confused for a few minutes!

My flight was delayed 3 hours so I had plenty of time to wander and take it in. As you found, the artist planned it to be taken in a few words at a time or in its entirety. It was just noticing a few words on my initial pass that immediately captured my attention. Since I had plenty of time to kill, I did go back and walk the entire thing after about an hour of boredom. My only thought about that was "I would never take this time if I were actually trying to catch a flight".

Which, I suppose, took my thoughts in another direction too. The thought of "walking on words." Good news, a complement - all words that can uplift and make you feel as if you're walking on air. Perhaps an interesting parallel to taking literal flight (once, finally, cleared for takeoff).

As for collision avoidance, well, let's just remember that most airline accidents happen on the ground too and almost always due to garbled communication. Words, again, perhaps?

Great post examining the magical origin of magical words. I wonder what it is about magic that inspires the use of such fantastic terms. I've always been partial to prestidigitator. It makes me think of some Victorian-era showman, like in that movie "The Prestige."

Alexis:

This is Liza's friend, Mike. We met at her party on Saturday. Just wanted to let you know that I'm really enjoying your writing on here. Your love of language really comes through. I'll certainly be stopping by in the future to offer my praises (and perhaps a scathing critique or two!)

Alexis - this is a great post on "bling". I had no idea about the Jamaican connection. Thanks for the explanation!

I also love your general use of words. "Each word that I type is a vibrant object on the screen, rooted in history but slightly malleable" - wow, that makes me feel so powerful when I think about all the words at my disposal!

Gina,
I am having difficulty as well and am leaning towards "hummingbird," "tea," "teacup," or "lyric." I am also a fan of anything food related, so I love your choice of "spaghetti." I don't think it is goofy. It is actually pretty interesting and will be a conversation piece!

Rich,
You sound like you did a fabulous job with your boys! I really believe that reading to your children is important, as it expands their imagination and vocabulary. Glad you liked the article, thanks!

Gina,
Well at least you can enjoy reading them now, especially if The Royal College of Art ever sells the bedtime story blankets!

I'm all for reading to kids at bedtime, I recall I used to read Australian poetry to my two boys from a picture book when they were young. Both of them have grown up with a love of words and ability to express themselves which I'm sure is linked to their "bedtime story" adventures. Nice article thanks, I really enjoyed it.

Steve,
Don't be so sure. It could be an original term. I'm going to look into how one suggests a word for the dictionary. If Rachel Ray can do it, then we can too!

Steve, I love the way "Generation V" sounds! Thanks for the suggestion. I'll add that to the definition. How great would it be if they actually added the word to the dictionary?
