My favorite scene in Thackeray&#039;s Vanity Fair is when Becky Sharp, that favorite anti-heroine of Victorian lit, throws Samuel Johnson&#039;s dicitonary -- a graduation gift from her horrible school mistress -- out the window of her coach on the way out of school and into the world. It&#039;s like she&#039;s saying, Who needs to be told by a man, and a mean old school mistress, what everything means? It always had inspired me to read dictionaries with a critical eye and to not be afraid to have fun with words. Great thought provoking post, Alexis!!!!</description>
